Synopsis Gelak is an illegitimate child living with her mother Samdan in a remote Tibetan village, where women are not allowed to join the Sang Offering to the Sacred Mountain. Samdan has always relied on men for a living, and Gelak has been treated as a vicious witch by the villagers. Fed up with the prejudice she has to face , Gelak decides to challenge the village’s traditions and fight for herself …

Director statement It is important to me to pay attention to the details of Tibetan people’s lives, who, living as they do with their own worries and troubles, are not as enigmatic as some people think. Only by boldly shattering stereotypes about Tibetan life can we have a deeper understanding of their culture.

Curators’ Notes Wind is a 2020 Tibetan-language drama film adapted from the novel “Bastard Child Gelak” by A Lai. Originally a boy in the book, Gelak is now reimagined as a teenage Tibetan girl experiencing the social prejudice regularly faced by single-parent families and Tibetan women. A debut film from director Dadren Wanggyal, Wind is also the first Tibetan feminist film in China to shrewdly touch upon the reality of injustice in this area.
