Wong Ka Kui remains one of the most recognisable and beloved figures in Hong Kong popular culture, who fronted the most iconic rock band from the city, Beyond. But behind the music, the image and the legend, who was the person his friends and companions actually knew? Directed by Rosa Pang and produced by Beyond founding member Yip Sai Wing and the band’s former manager Leslie Chan, this documentary moves beyond the celebrity and rediscovers the person through intimate memories from those who knew him closely — his music, personality, ideals and aspirations. As the Opening Film for annual festival Odyssey 2026 , “Because of You Ka Kui” provides a meaningful starting point for this year’s theme, #Fashion. From 28 September to 10 October, Odyssey explores fashion beyond what we wear via an eclectic programme— as identity, attitude, culture, memory and the way a generation expresses itself. In this spirit, Ka Kui’s enduring influence reminds us that fashion is also about how a generation chooses to look, sound and live.
