Boat People

1h 46m Drama 1982

投奔怒海

Sent to record the development of Vietnamese society after the war, a Japanese photojournalist discovers the shadows of Saigon’s collapse by following the lives of a poor Vietnamese family. As he starts to look below the polished exterior that the government wants him to see, he finds himself shocked by a harsh and impoverished society. Boat People, a cult gem of Hong Kong’s New Wave cinema, documents life in postwar Vietnam thanks to a raw depiction of hopelessness, violence, and poverty. The last film of Hui’s Vietnam trilogy (preceded by The Boy from Vietnam and The Story of Woo Viet) is undeniably a work of great sensibility and humanity that perfectly depicts the consequences of war and repression. Unsurprisingly, the feature won five Hong Kong Film Awards, including the Best Picture and Director award. - Federica Giampaolo
