There are films that capture the fashion of an era, and then there are films that help us imagine what that era looked like. Days of Being Wild belongs firmly to the latter.

For Odyssey 2026, I am particularly interested in the idea that fashion does not begin and end with clothes. It can be a hairstyle, a gesture, the way someone walks into a room, the music they listen to, or simply an attitude towards the world. Few films demonstrate this as beautifully as Days of Being Wild.

Leslie Cheung’s Yuddy is perhaps one of Hong Kong cinema’s clearest examples of fashion as attitude. His shirts, hair and immaculate appearance matter, but it is the way he inhabits them — detached, seductive, restless and quietly vulnerable — that created an image which has remained in our cultural memory. Around him, Maggie Cheung, Carina Lau and the film’s interiors, colours and music each contribute to a visual language that feels immediately recognisable.

This year also marks what would have been Leslie Cheung’s 70th birthday, making our return to the film particularly meaningful.

As part of our Hong Kong as Fashion journey, Days of Being Wild represents the moment we call Hong Kong Cool: when cinema does not simply preserve the style of an era, but helps create the style through which that era will later be remembered. (Note by Hiu Man Chan)
