In the summer of 2005, Mala, a young but under-talented 14-year-old boy, decides to take a stab to get himself selected in the city swim team.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Ruimin Zhao, born in October 2002, a Theatre and Film Directing student at Communication University of China.

Winner of the Best Short (Asubha) at Odyssey 2024.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT

As try outs for the city swim team approach, Mala’s training continues to falter. Despite his struggles, he desperately wants to make the team, even if only as a substitute. Realistically, this summer may be his final opportunity.

By chance, Mala catches his fellow players smoking in the school hallway, a violation of regulations. Now it’s time for Mala to choose whether to report them to the school in exchange for a ‘chance’ at try outs.
