Fresh Off Markham
敗走麥城/败走麦城
IN COMPETITION
Two immigrants from northeast China, a black Uber driver, and a young influencer from Hong Kong – these people seem to have nothing in common, yet fate has brought them together in a restaurant in Canada, each drinking a glass of Hongkong-style milk tea. Set in Markham, a multi-ethnic Canadian city with nearly 50% of its population being Chinese, this black comedy is a satire on the lives of certain Chinese immigrants, but also pays tribute to the Chinese workers who constructed the railways in Canada over a hundred years ago. Directed by three different directors, this three-part film itself is an excellent showcase of collaboration between filmmakers and actors across continents. -Chris Lau.
