Xingyue has just turned 19 and is struggling to reconcile her devout Muslim upbringing with her surroundings in a bustling Chinese metropolis. She decides to steal money from the family shop to pay for a tattoo - highly frowned upon in the religious community as altering the body is seen as an affront to Allah. While en route to get her tattoo, she learns that her grandmother has passed away. Overcome with grief, she finds new meaning in her community values. This coming-of-age drama is a melancholy exploration of the tension between community, family, belonging and bodily autonomy. By rebelling against a system that feels repressive, Xingyue discovers a new form of love and comfort, reconciling her past and present selves through the loss of her grandmother.
