Love After Love (2020)

2h 24m • Drama, Romance • 2020

第一爐香

Adapted from Eileen Chang’s classic novel, Love After Love is set in pre-war Hong Kong. A young Shanghai student, Ge Weilong, arrives in the city and enters the glamorous and complicated world of her wealthy aunt. Surrounded by dazzling parties, beautiful clothes, colonial architecture, and strict social rituals, she gradually finds herself caught in a complex web of desire, class, ambition, and survival. As she falls into a toxic romance with the charismatic but morally ambiguous Qiao Qiqiao, Weilong must choose between her independence and the seductive pull of material wealth. For Odyssey 2026, this film offers a particularly beautiful way to examine how a city fashions itself—where Shanghai meets Hong Kong, and where Chinese and Western aesthetics collide. It is a tragic tale of a young woman who becomes a victim of her own desires and the manipulations of those around her, ultimately asking who truly belongs to this dazzling world and who is merely trying to enter it.
