The Last Emperor 4K
末代皇帝
Academy Awards-winning classic The Last Emperor tells the extraordinary life of Puyi, who entered the Forbidden City as a child and became the last emperor of China, only to spend much of his life confronting a world in which the meaning of power, identity and belonging was constantly changing around him. Moving from the splendour and isolation of the imperial court through political upheaval, war and eventually an unexpectedly ordinary life, Bernardo Bertolucci’s epic is both an intimate portrait of one individual and a sweeping reflection on a country undergoing profound transformation. Through its remarkable costumes, architecture, colour and production design, history is not simply reconstructed but felt through the changing worlds that Puyi inhabits. Ultimately, it is a story about someone born into an identity chosen for him, who spends a lifetime discovering who he might be without it.
This 4K restored screening is dedicated to the late Jeremy Thomas (1949-2026), a legendary British producer whose vision won this film 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
