Lust, Caution

2h 37m Romance, Thriller 2007

色戒

Contaminated desire, loyal secrecy, and an illicit romance capture Ang Lee’s 2007 film Lust, Caution based on a short story by Eileen Chang. Amidst a Japanese-occupied Shanghai, a group of theatre students are radicalised joining the resistance to protect their country. Wong Chia Chi, the protagonist, must lead a double life acting as the sexually alluring Mai Tai Tai to infiltrate Mr Yee’s life, who they deem to be a Japanese political puppet. The resistance plans to assassinate Mr Yee but negates Chia Chi’s complicated feelings in their mission. This impressive espionage film won the 2007 Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion Award and the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Asian Film 2008. Lust, Caution is equally alluring as it is intricate. - Daniella Alconaba
