Miao no longer lives with her father, and they rarely see each other. However she’s still taking good care of his father’s car. On a rainy evening, her father visits, they have dinner together, but when Miao wakes up, she realises it was just a dream out of her yearning for her father. The dinner in the dream is a long-awaited conversation between father and daughter. “When we eat the stuffed bitter gourds together, you always only eat the meat, and I always eat the bitter gourds for you since you were little” reflects the food memories and unspoken rules that quietly form around the family table. The shaky handheld camera captures the inevitable growing distance in their relationship as they age. The daughter’s secret longing for her father is intertwined with the unforgettable memories of their shared meals, even in her dreams. -Qi Wu. Co-lead Curator of Odyssey 2024
